Governor Hochul Vetoes Statewide Freelance Isn’t Free Act Legislation

Disappointing news for New York freelancers. According to reporter Zach Williams of the New York Post, Governor Kathy Hochul has vetoed the proposed bill that would have expanded the Freelance Isn’t Free Act‘s reach outside of New York City to the rest of New York State.

The state version of FIFA, which was a virtual mirror image of the original city version, passed the state legislature with relative ease earlier in 2022, but it will not become state law until signed by the Governor or until the legislature overrides her veto.

At present, FIFA’s double damages provisions remain applicable to New York City-based freelancers and those who perform the majority of their work within New York City.

Based in New York City, PayMeNYC zealously prosecutes FIFA violations with regularity and great success. If you are owed a substantial sum for freelance work performed in New York City, please contact us for a free initial consultation to discuss your rights and options.
